Ashapura Dam sits at the Rajkot-side entrance to Gondal, next to the Ashapura Mata temple complex, and is open at all hours. Its wetlands attract a wide range of birds, including migratory species through the winter, which makes it a favourite with bird watchers and nature photographers. Evenings, around 6 pm, are the popular time for a walk or a picnic, and visitors often feed the ducks and fish. Good for kids.
Sureshwar Dam, also known as Veri Dam or Veri Talav, is a large water reservoir about 5 km north of Gondal, open at all hours. It fills through the monsoon and overflows, when the sound of falling water and the greenery around it draw photographers, cyclists and morning walkers; bird watchers come here too, and there are fish in the talav that visitors often feed. A playground on the site makes it an easy family outing. Keep a safe distance when the dam is in spate.
